For twenty years from Paris to London, via Gstaad, Tel Aviv, and Monaco, Charles Zana has shared his taste and expertise in the most beautiful residential and public interiors around the world. Paris-based, the interior designer likes to think he doesn’t have a set aesthetic.
The talented Interior Designer Charles Zana started acquiring art books from dealers in Saint-Germain-des-Prés at an early age and bought his first design object, a piece of 1950s blue Venini glassware, at the age of 25. Today, in his Paris apartment in an 18th-century building in Faubourg Saint-Germain, you can find several pieces by the 1970s Italian design collective Alchimia, a table by Peder Moos, lighting by Angelo Lelli, ceramics by Sottsass, and furniture and vases by Andrea Branzi.

To his clients, Charles Zana embodies the best of what French design has to offer. An architect rigorously trained at Paris’s École des Beaux-Arts and steeped in his country’s rich decorative arts history and tradition of fine craftsmanship, Zana is also a man who wears his voracious curiosity about contemporary art and Italian design on his sleeve.
For each project, he has a dual approach. First, that of a rigorous architect well versed in construction work, seeking comfort, fluid circulations, details, harmony, symmetry and discrete technology, but also capable of a nod to assimilating, when necessary, the history of places, of appropriating and of revisiting, of magnifying or of “twisting”.

The interiors he creates don’t share recognizable traits. There’s always a sense of balance, a certain orderliness and a tremendous precision. Charles Zana himself notes a distinctive palette (“harmonies of greys and greens”) and the use of more traditional architectural detailing, often in the form of panelling and cornices inspired by 18th-century models.
Beyond the profession of architect or interior designer, Charles Zana offers interiors, artistic and full of meaning, but also warm and responsive to the lives of the occupants. He wants to herald a new tradition, one where classicism is revisited and combined with emotion, not the bard of interiors’ braggarts.
